The company recently unveiled three ground-breaking devices for the Middle East region at GITEX. The solutions are EcoFlow RIVER 2 PRO, DELTA 2 and WAVE 2.

These devices harness the advantages of EcoFlow’s battery technology to deliver energy-efficient performance at home and for outdoor adventures.

To dive deeper into these innovations and understand how they contribute to the vision of an environmentally conscious future, Joy Wu, Head of LAMEA & PAX at Ecoflow explains all in this interview.

Can you share more about EcoFlow’s journey from its inception in 2017 to becoming a leader in portable power products and smart home energy solutions? What were the key milestones along the way?

As a multidisciplinary team of engineers passionate about transforming the energy storage landscape, we founded EcoFlow in 2017. Since then, our focus has been unwavering – to be a reliable and trusted energy companion for individuals and families globally, offering accessible and renewable power solutions for homes, outdoor adventures, and mobile spaces. It all began with the launch of our inaugural product, RIVER, at CES in the same year.

In 2021, EcoFlow achieved a significant milestone with the launch of DELTA Pro, earning recognition as TIME’s 100 Best Inventions of 2021.

Fast forward to 2023, and we continued our commitment to innovation by introducing three smart devices – BLADE, GLACIER, and WAVE 2. We also expanded our presence in the residential solar energy sector, unveiling a series of groundbreaking products like PowerStream, PowerOcean, and PowerOcean DC Fit in Europe.

Today, EcoFlow stands as a global force with operational headquarters in the USA, Germany, and Japan. We take pride in having empowered over 2.5 million users in more than 100 markets worldwide, a testament to our dedication to providing sustainable and innovative energy solutions.

Can you highlight any challenges that came along your way?

In navigating the complexities of being a global company, our foremost challenge lies in truly understanding the nuances of local markets, including regulations, policies, and the unique needs of our customers. This requires a delicate balance in our approach to product development and business operations. With headquarters spanning different continents and time zones, we see this as an opportunity to ‘think globally and act locally,’ but it also necessitates a constant effort to streamline our communication workflow for optimal efficiency.

Another significant challenge is the rapid evolution of the market, with new players entering the scene regularly. The key for us is to continually challenge ourselves to innovate and create products that genuinely address the evolving needs of our customers.

At EcoFlow, our foundation is built on a user-oriented mindset, grounded in the belief of ‘technology for good.’ This philosophy permeates every aspect of our operations, from research and development to product launches and daily interactions.

In our R&D processes, we begin with extensive user research, both quantitative and qualitative, ensuring that each product addresses specific pain points in various scenarios. This commitment to understanding our users doesn’t end with product launches; we actively seek and incorporate user feedback to refine and improve our existing products.

Choosing to launch our products on crowdfunding platforms from 2018 to 2021, such as Indiegogo, Kickstarter, and Makuake, was a strategic decision. This allowed us to receive timely customer feedback, enabling adjustments before the official launch. Our daily operations are marked by continuous communication with our audience through Facebook communities and customer visits. By fostering ongoing conversations, conducting regular polls, and actively listening to user voices, we ensure that our users play a pivotal role in shaping our operations, from product development and communication campaigns to customer service.

How does EcoFlow ensure that its products and technologies align with sustainability goals, and what impact do you envision having on the global transition toward renewable energy?

With the vision to power a new world, our commitment to providing alternative power sources aligns with our mission to empower users with sustainable energy solutions.

Our DELTA series and RIVER series portable power stations cater to diverse needs, offering both portability and the capacity to fuel heavy-duty appliances, making them ideal for outdoor and mobile spaces.

Moreover, our portable solar panels boast an impressive 23% energy conversion efficiency. When paired with our portable power stations, these panels make an off-grid lifestyle using renewable energy a viable option for everyday families, contributing to a more sustainable future.

But our commitment goes beyond portability. EcoFlow offers balcony and whole-home solar battery solutions, exemplified by the PowerStream and PowerOcean DC Fit launched earlier this year in Europe. These products embody our mission to help households achieve power autonomy, encompassing power storage, daily consumption, and even contributing to the grid.

On the environmental front, EcoFlow plays a crucial role in reducing carbon footprints. Our technology not only promotes renewable energy but also enables users to manage household energy consumption through smart home systems. For instance, the Smart Plug and EcoFlow App combo empowers users to monitor and control the energy usage of each home appliance, resulting in a reduced household carbon footprint.

In terms of production, we prioritise quality and environmental responsibility. Holding the prestigious ISO 9001 certification, the world’s most recognized Quality Management System standard, ensures consistent quality in our goods and services. Our suppliers undergo stringent quality screening to guarantee environmentally friendly raw materials, aligning with our commitment to environmental protection.

Furthermore, we are actively partnering with a specialized battery recycling company to minimise the environmental impact of expired batteries.

At EcoFlow, sustainability is not just a goal, but a fundamental ethos engrained in our products and practices.

EcoFlow’s vision is to “power a new world.” Could you elaborate on what this new world looks like, particularly in terms of technology-driven solutions, and how you envision making this future accessible to everyone?

Our journey to the future unfolds in three strategic steps: In step one, we’ve pioneered portable power solutions, emerging as industry leaders, empowering over 2.5 million users across 100 countries.

Moving to step two, we introduced the DELTA Pro Whole-home Backup Power Solution in 2022, ensuring a sustainable energy source for entire homes during blackouts. With a potent 3600W AC output, expandable to 4500W with X-Boost technology, it powers 99.99% of heavy-duty devices.

Now, in step three, our focus is on whole-home power independence. The PowerOcean DC Fit, launched earlier this year in Germany and the UK, is a unique PV-coupled retrofit battery solution. Seamlessly integrating into existing solar systems with simplicity and cost-effectiveness, we’re eager to bring this innovation to the Middle East market in the near future.

Can you explain the unique features of EcoFlow’s RIVER 2 PRO, DELTA 2, and WAVE 2 devices that set them apart from other portable power and climate control solutions in the market?

Firstly, the RIVER 2 Pro stands out as an affordable, fast-charging portable power station under 1kWh. With an impressive 70-minute charge time to 100% and an ultra-long lifetime, it not only provides the most cost-effective power but also serves as a reliable energy source for on-the-go lifestyles and emergency home backup. With a product lifetime six times longer than the industry average, the RIVER 2 Pro sets a new standard for long-term value in the portable power station market. As autumn arrives and the Middle East embraces the glamping trend, the RIVER 2 Pro proves to be the perfect outdoor companion.

Moving on to the DELTA 2, this best-in-class 1kWh portable power station boasts an 1800W AC output, capable of powering over 90% of home appliances. With a recharging speed seven times faster than the industry average and up to 3kWh of expandable capacity, the DELTA 2 becomes an essential for families prioritizing power security and comfort in the Middle East region.

Lastly, our Wave 2 takes innovation to the next level as the world’s first wireless portable AC with a heater. The second generation in EcoFlow’s WAVE series, WAVE 2, offers the industry’s fastest cooling and heating capabilities in a device of its kind, featuring 5100 BTU cooling and 6100 BTU heating with an effective area of 107.6 sq ft (10 sq m). It’s a game-changer in portable climate control.

What role do you see these devices playing in enhancing energy security and comfort for families in the Middle East, and what are the key applications for the DELTA 2 in powering home appliances?

In the face of increasing extreme weather events and growing power demand instability, power outages have become more prevalent.

Our DELTA 2 addresses this challenge by offering a 1kWh capacity, expandable up to 2048Wh with an additional battery. Its 1800W AC output powers over 90% of home appliances, and with EcoFlow’s X-boost technology, it prevents overloading from devices up to 2400W. The patented EcoFlow X-stream technology enables a rapid 80% recharge in just around 50 minutes. In critical situations such as blackouts, DELTA 2 becomes a beacon of sustainable power, providing users with the peace of mind they need for life’s essentials.

Moving outdoors, where people are increasingly engaging in activities like camping and road trips, our super portable RIVER lineup of portable power stations becomes indispensable. Offering crucial portable power, these devices ensure peace of mind for individuals enjoying the great outdoors.

Additionally, our DELTA lineup with high output powers ranging from 1400W to 3600W caters to professional needs in construction, cinematography, and live shows. These portable power stations provide peace of mind to professionals working in situations where reliable access to power can be challenging.

The industry has seen a growing interest in portable power solutions. How does EcoFlow envision the market evolving, and how does the company plan to stay at the forefront of these developments?

Sustainability and renewable energy have become global focal points, and the Middle East region holds strategic importance for us due to its market growth potential, abundant natural sources, and the burgeoning outdoor lifestyle trend.

A recent report from Mordor Intelligence projects a significant growth trajectory for the Middle-East battery energy storage system market, expecting a CAGR of over 5.2% during the forecast period 2020-2025. This rapid growth is attributed to the expanding utilization of renewable energy resources in the region.

In terms of natural sources, the Middle East, blessed with over 300 days of sunshine annually, emerges as an ideal location for individuals and families to invest in an eco-friendly and renewable lifestyle. The abundant sunlight not only supports renewable energy initiatives but also complements the growing outdoor lifestyle trend.

Notably, the Dubai government’s embrace of the glamping trend in recent years has transformed the region’s landscape. Building camping sites in deserts, mountains, and beaches, they’ve tapped into the UAE’s geographic features, creating a haven for glamping enthusiasts, particularly during the autumn season. This aligns seamlessly with our mission at EcoFlow, as we see an increasing number of people in the Middle East embracing eco-friendly and sustainable living, and we’re eager to be a part of this transformative journey.

Do you plan on expanding in Australia and New Zealand as well in the future?

We are currently operating in both Australia and New Zealand.

Australia ‘outraged’ over aid worker killed in Gaza

Worker Zomi Frankcom, an aid worker with the World Central Kitchen charity, has tragically lost her life in Gaza due to an Israeli air strike, sparking outrage and demands for transparency from Australia. Foreign Minister Penny Wong has called for a thorough inquiry into the incident, which also resulted in the deaths of six other charity workers.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed his desire to directly speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the death of Ms Frankcom. Netanyahu has acknowledged the incident as an unintended strike on innocent individuals, stating that such events unfortunately occur in the midst of conflict. He has promised a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

Amid escalating tensions between Australia and Israel, Senator Wong emphasized Australia’s strong stance on accountability for the death of humanitarian workers. She stressed the need for a transparent inquiry and full explanation, as well as accountability for those responsible.

Mr Albanese has labeled the deaths of the aid workers as “completely unacceptable,” emphasizing the tragedy of the situation. The Australian Palestine Advocacy Network has gone a step further, calling the deaths not just a tragedy but a crime, and urging the government to take decisive action against Israel.

Ms Frankcom’s family, friends, and colleagues have been left devastated by her untimely demise. Described as a kind and selfless individual, Ms Frankcom’s legacy of compassion and bravery in helping those in need is being mourned by those who knew her.

World Central Kitchen, the charity for which Ms Frankcom was working, has paused its operations in Gaza in the wake of the incident. Chief executive Erin Gore condemned the attack as unforgivable, highlighting the dangers faced by humanitarian organizations in conflict zones.

The Australian government remains firm in its demand for accountability and justice in the wake of this tragedy. While Israel has expressed regret for the incident, the international community, including Australia, is pushing for a transparent investigation and assurance that such events will not be repeated in the future.

Embassy officials from the Australian embassy in Moscow have been summoned by Russian authorities following a social media post that criticized the holding of Russian presidential elections in occupied parts of Ukraine. The Russian foreign ministry stated that the post, made on the Telegram platform, questioned Russia’s territorial integrity and contained false information about the voting process in various Russian regions during the presidential election on March 15-17.

Australia’s Chargé d’affaires was informed that the online post was considered as interference in Russia’s internal affairs. The Russian government demanded that the message be removed and that measures be taken to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The Australian embassy’s post on Telegram on March 19, in Russian language, highlighted Australia’s stance on the election conducted by Russia in Ukrainian territories. The post emphasized that these actions by Russia undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence. Australia rejected the outcome of the election and reiterated its call for Russia to withdraw from Ukraine’s internationally recognized territory.

The Russian presidential election, which saw President Vladimir Putin declared the winner with over 87% of the vote, took place in areas of Ukraine that Russia claims to have annexed, including Crimea and parts of four regions seized after its 2022 invasion.

The incident underscores the ongoing tensions between Russia and Western countries, including Australia, regarding the situation in Ukraine. Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its continued involvement in Ukrainian affairs have been met with strong opposition and condemnation from the international community.

McDonald’s says a worldwide IT outage that hindered its servers from processing payments and resulted in restaurants closing across the country and elsewhere on Friday evening was not a cybersecurity violation.

The firm has also confirmed some of its food outlets’ systems are back up and running, and it is currently working to restore service to the rest of its restaurants as soon as possible.

The difficulty is being resolved, according to a McDonald’s spokesman.

“We thank customers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.

“Notably, the issue is not related to a cybersecurity event.”

The outage primarily affected the company’s internal systems, with one McDonald’s employee telling the ABC that servers couldn’t see anything on their computer monitors.

It also affected the MyMacca’s app, with notifications being sent to global outage tracker Downdetector from around 4 p.m. AEDT.

The technology meltdown affected the fast-food supply chain’s worldwide operations, with stores being closed in Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand.

Restaurants in Canada, Hong Kong, Germany, and Austria were also reportedly affected.

McDonald’s has around 1,000 restaurants in Australia, according to its website.
